«Stringers»
douGLASs 2020
Annette Douglas has been fascinated by the craft of glassmaking for many years. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Annette Douglas Textiles in 2019, she began an extensive exploration of glass as a material, travelling to workshops and studios in the USA, Germany, Italy and Switzerland.
The collection “Stringers” emerges from this research journey and presents a fusion of black and white glass threads created using the traditional Roll-Up technique. Fine glass stringers are carefully arranged on a flat surface, gently heated, and then rolled onto the glassblower’s pipe — a process that allows precise control while opening a wide range of creative possibilities. By combining glass threads with different melting behaviours, dynamic visual effects arise: black and white lines shift and merge, forming organic, bark-like structures that give each object a distinctive texture and depth. As in her textile work, Annette Douglas approaches glass through experimentation, exploring new techniques, material behaviour and visual languages.
As a final refinement, the lower sections of the objects are engraved with a bark-inspired pattern. This intervention enhances the tactile quality of the pieces and emphasises the dialogue between precision craftsmanship and artistic interpretation that defines the “Stringers” collection.
