«Piega»

In Italian, «Piega» translates to «fold».  Annette Douglas is fascinated by the material of paper—how it folds, bends, and its simplicity. Simultaneously, she appreciates the elegance of pristine white paper. As a designer, she has been captivated by transforming paper concepts into textile designs for many years. Textile fabric and paper are already highly complementary, paper and glass even more.

The creative journey of «Piega» begins with constructing 3D paper models through cutting, glueing, and shaping. Ultimately, the 3D scanning of the paper form takes place, transitioning from analogue to digital. The scanned data then serves as a starting point for creating a wooden mold, shaped meticulously through 3D milling. This marks the digital-to-physical metamorphosis, setting the stage for the artisanal transformation of «Piega».

Finally, returning to the analogue in the hot glass studio, «Piega» comes to life through the skilled hands of a glassblower in Germany. He manually blows the molten glass into the digitally crafted form using a glassblower‘s pipe. The series reflects the fascinating interplay of different media and showcases the alchemy of craftsmanship, paper inspiration turned into the fascinating material glass.

«Piega» is a limited edition and in solid or available with color gradient.

This series continues to evolve. A unique, one-of-a-kind edition is currently in development. Created using the so-called roll-up technique, these pieces evoke the look of ceramic glazes while preserving the interplay of glass with light and reflection.
