Project Overview
Casa Balmelli, built between 1956 and 1957, is considered a key work of the Ticino School of architecture and marks the first realised project by architect Tita Carloni. The house is defined by a clear geometric language, honest materiality and a sensitive integration into the surrounding landscape. Responding closely to the hillside topography, the building opens generously toward nature through large window surfaces. Exposed concrete, natural stone and wood give the architecture a modest yet powerful presence.
Architectural Character
A distinctive feature of the interior are the colourful window frames designed by Tita Carloni. Vibrant yellow frames define the living room and children’s room, while a delicate blue characterises the master bedroom. In the children’s room, a coffered ceiling with coloured panels further enriches the spatial identity.
Restoration and Interior Design
In 2024, Richter Tobler Architects carried out a faithful restoration of the listed building, carefully preserving its architectural heritage. The interior was redesigned by Annette Douglas in close collaboration with the architects, creating a contemporary living environment while respecting the original spatial concept. The layout now includes a generous living area and two bedrooms, balancing historical authenticity with present-day living requirements.
Architectural Impact
The project demonstrates how sensitive interior design can engage with modernist heritage architecture, preserving historical character while enabling contemporary use and spatial clarity.
