«Casa Balmelli»

by Tita Carloni in Rovio, 2024

Casa Balmelli was built between 1956 and 1957 and is considered a key work of the Ticino School of architecture. It marked the first realised project by architect Tita Carloni.

The building's architecture is defined by a clear geometric language, the use of simple and honest materials, and a sensitive integration into the surrounding landscape. The composition responds closely to the topography of the hill it stands and opens generously toward nature through large window surfaces. Exposed concrete, natural stone, and wood lend the house a modest yet powerful presence.

Striking and distinctive in the interior are the colourful window frames designed by Tita Carloni for the Casa Balmelli. In the living room and children's room, a vibrant yellow; in the master bedroom, a delicate blue. This is complemented by a coffered ceiling with colored panels in the children's room.

In 2024, Casa Balmelli was faithfully restored by Richter Tobler Architects. The building is listed as a heritage site.

The interior was redesigned by Annette Douglas in collaboration with Richter Tobler Architects. The layout includes a spacious living area and two bedrooms.
