Project Overview
Under the guiding principle “Colours with Function,” a comprehensive textile concept was developed for the Birkenrain Care Home – Stiftung für sinnerfülltes Altern in Zurich. The project supports atmosphere, orientation and comfort across different functional areas of the building. Designed by the architects as a contemporary yet welcoming environment, the building combines modern architecture with a warm residential character tailored to the needs of its residents.

Textile Concept
Annette Douglas developed and designed all textiles for the project, carefully adapted to the specific spatial requirements and uses:

  • SNOOZER acoustic curtain fabric for office areas
  • STREAMER pro transparent acoustic curtain for the restaurant
  • FARASAN textile for lounge areas

The acoustic textiles SNOOZER and STREAMER pro allow natural daylight to flow into the spaces while improving room acoustics, creating calm and comfortable environments without compromising architectural openness. All textiles used are flame-retardant, meeting the stringent safety requirements of healthcare and residential care buildings.

Architectural Impact
The project demonstrates how textile design can enhance care and living environments by bringing together colour, materiality and function to create a coherent spatial identity.
