«digital goes analog»
Atelier Pfister carpet design 2016
Project Type: Textile design / rug
Client: PFISTER, Atelier Pfister
Design: Annette Douglas
Curator: Alfredo Häberli
Project Overview
The Atelier Pfister Collection is exclusively designed by established and emerging Swiss designers and curated by internationally renowned Swiss designer Alfredo Häberli. Annette Douglas has been part of the Atelier Pfister Collection as a designer since 2010. For the 2016 carpet collection, all participating designers were invited with a “carte blanche” to develop their personal design proposal. The hand-tufting technique, wool qualities and colour palette were predefined. Twelve of the twenty invited designers accepted the invitation and submitted their designs, resulting in a diverse collection of distinctive hand-tufted carpets.
Design
Exclusively for Atelier Pfister, Annette Douglas designed a multicoloured carpet based on the concept “digital goes analogue.” The design follows a digital pixel aesthetic yet is entirely handcrafted using traditional analogue techniques. This deliberate contrast gives the carpet a distinctive twist, combining digital visual language with textile craftsmanship.
Material and Format
The carpet measures 170 × 240 cm and is made of 100% wool. The hand-tufted production emphasises both tactile quality and artisanal precision.
Design Impact
The project demonstrates how digital design concepts can be reinterpreted through traditional textile techniques, creating a dialogue between contemporary design thinking and craftsmanship.
