Project Overview
The listed UBS headquarters on Zurich’s Bahnhofstrasse remained largely unchanged externally, while the interior underwent a comprehensive transformation. EM2N Architects, in collaboration with Hürlemann Architects, developed a new spatial concept aimed at improving orientation, openness and contemporary workplace functionality. Prior to renovation, decades of alterations had turned the interior into a complex and difficult-to-navigate spatial structure. A central objective of the project was therefore to restore clarity and spatial legibility while respecting the historic fabric of the building.
Acoustic Challenge
The renovation balanced heritage preservation with the ambition to create a modern and open working environment. Diverse spatial requirements — ranging from representative public areas to discreet client meeting rooms — demanded differentiated textile solutions ensuring both acoustic comfort and privacy.
Acoustic Solution
From 2014 to 2018, Annette Douglas Textiles was responsible for the overall textile concept, material sampling and implementation support. A specially developed silver-metallic curtain defines the foyer, adding a distinctive architectural identity to the entrance space. On the upper floors, functional sound-absorbing textiles made from STREAMER pro and STREAMER pro matt were installed. The STREAMER pro matt variant was specifically developed to maintain discretion in client meeting rooms while improving room acoustics and preserving architectural openness. The translucent acoustic curtains preserve the flow of natural daylight, maintaining bright and open spaces while improving acoustic comfort. The textiles are also flame-retardant, fulfilling stringent safety standards required for public buildings.
Application
- acoustic textiles STREAMER pro and STREAMER pro matt
- allows natural daylight to enter the space
- flame-retardant according to international safety standards
- comprehensive textile concept for building renovation
- custom-designed metallic curtain in the foyer
- sound-absorbing solutions for office and meeting areas
- enhanced privacy through matte textile surfaces
- improved room acoustics and spatial orientation
- integration within a listed architectural structure
Architectural Impact
The project demonstrates how textile acoustic solutions can connect historic building structures with contemporary functional requirements, creating both spatial clarity and atmospheric quality within complex renovation projects.
Textile acoustic solutions by Annette Douglas Textiles enhance room acoustics, meet flame-retardant safety standards, and preserve architectural transparency and design intent.
