Project Overview
The Drei Rosen School in Basel features a versatile auditorium used as a classroom, music room, meeting space, event venue, lecture hall and concert hall. The multifunctional space was extensively renovated by Carmen Quade Architects on behalf of the Building Department of the City of Basel, in close collaboration with heritage preservation authorities. Lighting, stage technology, room acoustics and the colour concept were fundamentally modernised.

Acoustic Challenge
The hall’s diverse uses require adaptable acoustic conditions — ranging from clear speech intelligibility for lectures to balanced sound quality for musical performances. At the same time, the historic character of the building had to be preserved, limiting structural interventions and requiring a flexible, reversible acoustic solution.

Acoustic Solution
To improve room acoustics, the niches of the blind windows along the walls were fitted with SNOOZER acoustic curtains. The textile systems allow flexible adjustment of the acoustic atmosphere while integrating respectfully into the historic architectural setting.
