Project Overview
Overlooking the village of Haldenstein, Switzerland, the new atelier by Peter Zumthor rises above the landscape much like the hillside villas overlooking Los Angeles. The building stages both its surroundings and its creative work. The four-storey studio is conceived as a glass house embedded into the hillside, creating a close relationship between interior space, daylight and landscape. Transparency and spatial clarity define the architectural concept.

Acoustic Challenge
The extensive glazed façades create bright and open interiors but also generate challenging acoustic conditions due to sound reflections. The atelier required a solution that improves room acoustics while preserving transparency, daylight quality and the architectural purity of the space.

Acoustic Solution
A continuous concrete bench along the glass façade provides heating and protection, while the transparent acoustic curtain STREAMER pro (αw 0.8), positioned towards the interior, ensures effective sound absorption and balanced acoustics. The translucent textile allows natural daylight to flood the atelier while maintaining visual openness toward the surrounding landscape. At the same time, the acoustic curtain provides solar protection and integrates seamlessly into the architectural concept, reinforcing the idea of a curtain-wall house. The textile is flame-retardant, fulfilling stringent safety requirements while remaining visually lightweight and architecturally unobtrusive.
