Annette Douglas

Annette Douglas lives and works for textiles, design, and innovation. Her special ability lies in her twin competence, design, and engineering. Since 1999, she runs a studio with a small team, the «Annette Douglas Textiles AG», which in 2011 turned into a limited company.

Annette Douglas won innumerable awards. She has dual British and Swiss nationality and is the fourth generation of her family to work in the textile business. Her great-grandfather John Thomas Douglas worked for Dobson & Barlow Textile Machinery in Bolton Great Britain. Her grandfather Robert Douglas was the Managing Director of Dobson & Barlow. Her father, Keith Douglas, worked in Textile Engineering at Zellweger Uster and additionally translated major textile technical literature from English to German, among others the common textile dictionary “ITS”.

As a design engineer, Annette Douglas is familiar with all textile techniques. Her skills and experience allow her to optimize the creations at the interface between design, innovation, manufacturing technology, and costing. Over the years Annette Douglas’s work and designs went to collections of well-known international brands like Maharam, Vescom, Ulf Moritz, Sahco Hesslein, Designtex, Jab Anstoetz, Dedar, Zimmer & Rohde, and many more. Since 2010 she develops for Atelier Pfister curtain collection with curator Alfredo Häberli.

Annette Douglas has a great affinity for architecture. There is no doubt that had Annette Douglas not become a designer, she would have been an architect. Her competence is evidenced by concepts and projects in this area. During her studies, she already developed and designed textile façades and other textile applications for architecture. Today she can point out several buildings with textiles that were tailor-made for architecture.

Since 2004 her focus lies on textile concepts, on the sense of hearing. Meanwhile, Annette Douglas Textiles is the brand for acoustic textiles solutions. That is why she invented the CTI research project in 2009. Annette Douglas carried out this research project in collaboration with the EMPA (Federal Laboratories for Materials Science & Technology) in her capacity as the initiator, project manager and commercial partner. The first translucent acoustic fabric collection Annette Douglas Textiles ACOUSTICS® is since 2011 on the market.

The translucent acoustic curtain collection is even the big winner of prestigious awards such as the «Swiss Design Award 2011», the «Red Dot Best of the Best 2012», the «Dwell on Design Award 2012» in USA or the «EESC Award 2013» handed over from the European Union or the Blue Drop Award 2014 «BEST CONTRACT» in Brussels. Furthermore, Annette Douglas got nominated for «Swiss Design Award» in 1997 and 2005.
